Friday, February 17th, 2012

Do you live a life with psoriasis and think you’re alone? Well, you most definitely aren’t. The condition affects 7.5 million people in the United States according to the National Psoriasis Foundation. Believe it or not, there are even celebrities that live life with psoriasis. Below is a list of celebrities who suffer from psoriasis and just like you they understand the challenges of life with psoriasis.

  • Kim Kardashian: Who was recently diagnosed with psoriasis expressed concerns that her career would be affected from the news. She said things like, “People don’t understand the pressure on me to look perfect… When I gain a pound, it’s in the headlines. Imagine what the tabloids would do to me if they saw all these spots?” Kim’s dermatologist suggested she take a break from her fast-paced lifestyle because sometimes psoriasis flare-ups can be triggered by stress.
  • LeAnn Rimes: This two-time Grammy winning artist has been in the spotlight for more than half of her life, but until recently, she kept her struggle with psoriasis under wraps. In 2008, she decided to open up about her experience as part of the “Stop Hiding, Start Living” psoriasis awareness campaign sponsored by Abbott.
  • Jon Lovitz: The Saturday Night Live alum has a great sense of humor, but wants people to know that psoriasis is not joke. Last year, he also shared his story as a part of the “Are You Serious?” national awareness campaign sponsored by Janssen.
  • Jerry Mathers: Is best known to fans as Theodore “Beaver” Cleaver on the 1950s sitcom, Leave It To Beaver. Mathers has a relatively mild form of psoriasis, but that doesn’t mean he’s escaped the discomfort and embarrassment that may accompany severe outbreaks.
  • Stacy London: This What Not To Wear co-host has certainly made a name for herself, but she knows better than anyone that beauty is not just skin deep. Diagnosed with psoriasis at age 4, London experienced years of painful itching and scaly outbreaks. As an adult, she became a spokesperson for the National Psoriasis Foundation’s PATH program, which offers tips on living with the condition and maintaining good health and spirits.

Above are five popular celebrities who live life with psoriasis. Just like you, they know that life with psoriasis can be huge challenge and hassle, especially when they are constantly in the public eye. Celebrities With Psoriasis: Jon Lovitz

Monday, October 3rd, 2011

Believe it or not there are many popular celebrities with psoriasis besides Kim Kardashian. Over the past few months, thousands of people have become more aware of psoriasis because Kim was diagnosed with it. There are more celebrities with psoriasis who have the disease that we are not aware of. One celebrity with psoriasis, who you may only know by face, is Jon Lovitz.

Jon Lovitz is a famous comedian and actor. He is best known for his role on Saturday Night Live from 1985 to 1990. He has played roles in movies such as Ratboy, Big, and A League of Their Own. Jon Lovitz also has psoriasis. Bet you never knew that, did you? Well, if you think all celebrities are perfect you’re wrong. There are plenty of celebrities with psoriasis.

Last year, Jon Lovitz did an interview with USA Today about his psoriasis condition. Read below to find out how this celeb manages his psoriasis:

Q: Hi Jon. Who knew you had psoriasis? Your skin looks good.

A: I was diagnosed at age 42 — about 12 years ago. It started as little red dots and got worse and worse over years until it was basically covering 75% of my body. My arms, legs, back. It was just miserable. I went to a dermatologist and he said yeah, it’s psoriasis.

Q: Do they know why you got it?

A: No one in my family has it. I don’t have any stress. I really didn’t. I had a nice life.

Q: What does it feel like?

A: It is a skin disease where your skin gets red, scaly patches and flakes. It hurts and itches. It makes your skin feel extremely stiff and it bleeds. The wind comes up and it feels like your skin’s on fire.

Q: Does it bother you when you work?

A: It interferes with my work life. Sometimes on stage I am trying to ignore it but there’s the pain and itching. And it looks like dandruff, and I’m brushing it off my shoulders.

Q: You have a very visual job.

A: Yeah, I didn’t want to wear short sleeves on stage anymore. And I’d go to the beach or pool and didn’t want to take off my shirt. I was at a pool at a stand-up thing in Fort Lauderdale and I was thinking, ‘Should I go to the pool and take my shirt off?’ People would want a picture though and then I’d have to put my shirt on for that. It’s very embarrassing. It’s humiliating. I play tennis all the time too, and it was on my knees, but I didn’t want to not play tennis.

Q: Does it impact you emotionally?

A: It’s emotionally draining. It makes you depressed. People used to think it was leprosy. Most people don’t know what it is. People have noticed and asked what it is.

Q: So you decided to do these PSAs about it?

A: I’m a very private person but I was in a position where I could help. I take this new treatment, one shot every three months, and it cleared up after like two months. Jerry Zucker directed the spots with me (Zucker did Naked Gun, Airplane, Ghost). He came up with a song parody and I do that. It’s funny, entertaining, but not making fun of psoriasis.

Q: Any advice for fellow sufferers?

A: I’d stress to people to get help — there are treatments. See a dermatologist. Also, I hope people will see the PSA and see me joking and think, ‘Maybe I shouldn’t be so ashamed.’

See… Kim Kardashian isn’t the only celebrity with psoriasis! There are plenty of celebrities with psoriasis who are constantly in the public eye and manage their psoriasis very well. There is currently no cure for psoriasis, but it can be managed through prescription medications and over the counter psoriasis treatments.
